A tireless artist
This multidisciplinary artist was born in Santiago in 1947. Twenty years later, together with a self-taught group of friends and artists, he founded Teatro Aleph. With a provocative way of writing inspired by the political and social movements of the time, his pieces soon became Latin American theatrical icons. Due to his work encouraging theater during the first few years of the dictatorship, he was sent into exile in France, where he reformed the group, working with them right up to the last day of his life in Europe.

Founded in 1967 in Chile by director, playwright and actor Oscar Castro, this theater group was created by students from different universities without formal theater training, who were taught by artists such as Héctor Noguera, the Brazilian Augusto Boal and Jerzy Grotowski from Poland. During the dictatorship, they visited concentration camps performing their plays and, from 1976 onwards - when their director was exiled - they worked in France. In 2013, Teatro Aleph was refounded in Chile under director Gabriela Olguín.

Fernando Mateluna is a Chilean who arrives alone in Paris and is invited to join a theater group made up of exiles just like him. This play talks about universal values like tolerance and respect for others.
Fernando Mateluna is an exile in Paris, arriving in this vast, unknown city with only a suitcase to his name. He does not speak French and faces the labyrinth of Parisian bureaucracy to get his official immigration documents. He visits the banks of the Seine, the Louvre and Les Folies Bergères, walking around and daydreaming, pleased to be in the City of Light but still feeling lonely. By chance he meets a fellow Chilean, Vitu, who becomes his friend and who runs a theater group made up of exiles. They are working on a play that tells the story of a Latin American dictator. His friend tries to convince him to take advantage of his stay in Paris and learn everything he can, but Mateluna does not even want to open his suitcase, because it contains the world he left behind that he did not want to leave. He says to his friends that, “as soon as the dictatorship ends in my country, I’m going to grab my suitcase and run to the airport”.
