Puppet Theater

Teatro y su Doble

The Company

It was created in 2005 as Teatro Milagros: a space of experimentation and search for new languages and diverse theatrical tools, where the figure of the puppet was gaining more and more strength. In its plays, the actors-manipulators are at the service of the theatrical object, managing to transmit the text and awaken emotions through the illusion of life of the dolls, and the willingness of the spectator to surrender to a subjective look. The company has already staged other outstanding plays, such as Pedro y el lobo, Sobre la cuerda floja, Feos and El hámster del presidente, the latter three also co-productions of Fundación Teatro a Mil.

17 years after its premiere, the acclaimed Chilean company Teatro y su Doble returns to present its first production, where a puppet brings to life a simple public employee facing a difficult economic situation.

Akakiy Akakievich is a human being like many, unsuccessful, who spends his hours in a job that tires him out. A man alone, simple and without ambition, wandering in his tiny space in an orderly and silent manner. A good man. But one day, as if by magic, something shakes him. An event that seems like bad news, the tearing of his shabby coat in the freezing winter of St. Petersburg awakens him from his lethargy and submission.

It becomes imperative to get a new one, something beyond his economic possibilities. For the first time, his vital commitment sprouts. His life is modified by the virtue of the desire that moves him. He gets an existential engine for that apparently subhuman and helpless life. He makes an effort, he succeeds: "he sees the light in the form of a cape", he recovers his dignity, his dreams... and he flourishes. But the system and destiny hover over mortals and Akakiy will not be the exception....
