“Three years ago, Jorge Mateluna collaborated on the creation of the play Escuela. That same year, the police arrested him a few blocks from a bank robbery and accused him of this crime based on questionable evidence. Now he is a prisoner, sentenced to 16 years in jail. We believe that he was unfairly convicted and the play Mateluna is an attempt at debating his possible innocence.”

Guillermo Calderón is the author of this play that brings to the stage the complexity of the case of this former activist of the Manuel Rodríguez Patriotic Front and tries to develop the ideas of guilt, justice and the way in which our society considers ex-guerillas. It is a theatrical exercise to understand Mateluna the person and challenge a political culture that does not know how to honor the legacy of those who fought against the dictatorship. Mateluna will be premiered in October 2016 in Berlin as part of the The Aesthetics of Ressitance – Peter Weiss 100 Festival at the HAU Hebbel am Ufer Theater.
